As part of our commitment to raising awareness for mental health and suicide prevention, we are excited to present the DJ Run 2024 Online Mental Health Series. Throughout the week, mental health professionals will lead discussions on crucial topics surrounding mental health, providing valuable insights, tools, and resources for anyone who may be struggling or seeking to better understand mental health challenges.
This series aims to create a safe, informative space for learning, reflection, and community support. below, you will find the itinerary for the week, including brief descriptions of each session’s focus. We invite you to join us and be part of this important conversation.

Monday, 11 November 2024: 13h00 – 14h00
Introduction to WMR and DJ Run
In this opening session, HPCSA-Registered Counsellor CJ Nel from CJ Nel Counselling, along with our own Gareth Kropman and Vanessa Clarke, will introduce you to the inspiring mission of Watch Me Rise and share details about the DJ Run initiative. You’ll gain insight into the power of turning trauma into a force for good. This initiative has the potential to inspire many and spark meaningful conversations about suicide awareness and prevention throughout the series. As the team touches on the meaning behind Watch Me Rise, we hope it will lead to important discussions around these critical topics throughout the week.

How to Approach Conversations on Suicide and Depression
Starting a conversation about mental health, especially topics as sensitive as suicide and depression, can feel overwhelming. This session, led by CJ Nel, will equip you with tools to approach these tough discussions with empathy and care. We will explore ways to create a safe, non-judgmental space where your loved ones feel comfortable opening up. By focusing on active listening and supportive language, you can make these difficult conversations more approachable and impactful.

Recognising and Supporting Through Depression and Suicidal Ideation
Depression and suicidal thoughts can often be hidden, affecting both those experiencing them and their support systems. In this session, Lyr Weltsman will guide you in identifying the subtle signs of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation in yourself or loved ones. We will cover the emotional, behavioural, and physical cues that indicate someone may be struggling, and provide practical tools to approach conversations, offer support, and navigate this challenging journey together. Whether you’re personally affected or supporting someone who is, this session empowers you to take early action and help prevent a crisis.

This session be uploaded to our YouTube channel and will explore the physical and mental effects of stress, while offering techniques such as mindfulness, breathing exercises, and time management to help individuals build resilience and regain control. Perfect for those feeling overwhelmed, this discussion will equip you with tools to handle stressful situations with confidence.

What to Do in a Mental Health Crisis
Knowing what to do when a loved one is in the midst of a mental health crisis is crucial. This session, led by CJ Nel, will guide you through practical steps to take when someone you care about is in immediate danger due to suicidal thoughts or actions. We will discuss how to stay calm, ensure their safety, and connect them with the right professional resources. This session will also touch on self-care strategies for those supporting someone in crisis, helping you stay grounded during high-stress situations.

Men and Mental Health
Leon de Beer, Deputy Director at the South African Federation for Mental Health, will discuss the often-overlooked mental health struggles men face, highlighting how societal expectations around masculinity can lead to emotional suppression, increased rates of depression, and suicide. Leon will offer insights on breaking down these harmful stereotypes, encouraging men to seek help, and fostering open conversations about mental health. This talk aims to create a safe space where men feel empowered to express their emotions and prioritise their well-being. This talk will take place on Zoom and some counsellors will be available during the session for those who wish to reach out for support.

Supporting Suicide Survivors on Their Healing Journey
Surviving a suicide attempt often leaves individuals feeling lost and emotionally overwhelmed. This session, led by Zola Chonco from Bridging the Gap Holistic Services, and co-hosted by Vanessa Clarke, focuses on how to support those who have survived an attempt, offering guidance on fostering a supportive and compassionate environment. We will discuss the emotional, physical, and psychological challenges survivors face, as well as how loved ones can play a key role in their healing and recovery process.

Overcoming Suicidal Thoughts and Finding Support
In this session, Carrie Hickman will discuss the steps individuals can take to overcome suicidal thoughts, including seeking out beneficial therapies like cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and mindfulness practices. We will also explore what to do if you feel unsupported, where to find help when traditional support systems are unavailable, and practical ways to access mental health resources. Additionally, we will highlight the powerful impact of physical exercise and spending time outdoors in nature as part of the healing journey, fostering mental clarity, and improving emotional well-being. Whether it’s self-guided strategies or professional help, this session provides actionable steps for those struggling to find the right path forward.

Addressing Stigma Around Mental Health Disclosure
Mental health stigma can make it difficult for individuals to open up about their struggles, whether in personal or professional settings. In this session, led by Zola Chonco, we will discuss the impact of stigma on those living with mental illness and explore the potential benefits and challenges of disclosing mental health conditions to employers, family, and friends. By addressing these societal pressures, we can work toward creating more accepting environments that encourage openness and support.
